MEL c says she was a ‘functionin­g anorexic’ during her time in the spice Girls.

the singer, pictured, whose real name is Melanie chisholm, said she became so obsessed with what she was eating she did not realise she was also depressed. Miss chisholm, 43, who was known as sporty spice, said becoming a pop star was a fairytale and ‘I thought I had to be a certain way to be deserving of everything that was happening to me’.

she told the telegraph that to stay slim as a spice Girl she exercised obsessivel­y and ‘didn’t eat carbs, didn’t eat protein. For a few years I was living on fruit and vegetables. I was a functionin­g anorexic’.

she added that when her GP diagnosed depression in 2000, the year the spice Girls broke up, ‘I felt so relieved, because I just thought, “It’s got a name. I can be helped”. It was such a relief to me.’
