Diet friendly bread: Hovis loaf with 30% fewer carbs

- Daily Mail Reporter

FOR those trying to lose weight, bread is often the first foodstuff to be banned from their diet.

But Hovis is trying to keep bread on the menu for soaring numbers of heath-conscious Brit ons–by making a reduced-carbohydrate loaf.

The baker yesterday unveiled three 400g loaves that it promises contain 30 per cent fewer carbs than typical sliced bread.

It comes after its researchers found that carbohydrates are cited by 31 per cent of consumers as a main reason to eat less bread.

Its Lower Carb Soft & Tasty White loaf contains 32g of carbs per 100g, while Tasty Wholemeal has 27g and Deliciously Seeded has 27.2g, according to The Grocer magazine. Average loaves of the same styles contain 38.9g to 45.8g, Hovis said. Even Hovis’s lower-calorie Nimble range has 37g to 41.9g.

The Grocer said that Hovis would not reveal how the carbs had been cut, but said that extra wheat protein and fibre had been added for taste.
