Service with a smile

I AGREE with Philip Hodson that National Service was the best thing ever (Letters). I would gladly do it again tomorrow, but at half-speed!

Everyone was a much better person after doing it, and I often think back on it and say to myself: ‘How lucky I was!’

I spent most of my two years in Hong Kong as a cook and to get there I enjoyed a five-week cruise that didn’t cost me a penny.

Reintroducing National Service could solve unemployment — and all the 18- to 30-year-old ne’er-do-wells would be on the first plane out.
