Betting sites told ‘play fair’
BRITAIN’S competition watchdog has launched a crackdown on gambling websites that ‘load the dice’ against their users.
Five companies – which were not named – were yesterday warned they faced heavy fines or losing their licences if they did not make changes immediately. They are accused of misleading customers with sign-up promotions then preventing them from walking away with winnings.
The allegations came after some 800 complaints and an investigation into the £4.5bn industry by the Competition And Markets Authority.
Senior director Nisha Arora said: ‘We know online gambling is always going to be risky, but firms must also play fair.
‘People should get the deal they’re expecting if they sign up to a promotion, and be able to walk away with their money when they want to.’
