Trumped by France

-

WhATeVeR your view of Donald Trump, he is the president of our closest ally and single biggest trading partner.

That is why this paper – without ever endorsing Mr Trump’s style of politics – enthusiastically backed the planned state visit. It was without doubt in our national interest, especially with a post-Brexit trade deal firmly on the table.

But the British Left – which has turned a blind eye to an army of torturers and despots being hosted by the Queen – threatened widespread protests, forcing the White house to delay.

The predictable and damaging result is that French President emmanuel Macron has stolen a march on our flat-footed diplomats and invited Mr Trump to Paris.

And from the hypocritical Left, who howled at the prospect of the Trump visit but regard Mr Macron as something akin to a saint, there comes not a peep of protest. SO RIP grammar schools. This week it became all too painfully clear that Mrs May’s education revolution has bitten the dust. This – in a country slipping ever further down education league tables and where social mobility is in retreat. how very, very depressing. BRITAIN’S national debt stands at a colossal £1.7trillion and our deficit £50billion a year. But in a momentous decision, Speaker John Bercow ruled that MPs no longer have to wear ties in the house of Commons. The nation can breathe a sigh of relief that in times of profound uncertainty we have such political giants guaranteeing Britain’s future.
