WINGS FAVOURITE FOR DERBY DOUBLE

- By MARCUS TOWNEND Racing Correspondent

WINGS OF EAGLES, 40-1 when successful in the Investec Derby, is poised to start favourite for the Irish Derby tomorrow but there will be no ride in the Classic for his Epsom jockey Padraig Beggy.

As forecast in Racemail on Monday, Ryan Moore will ride Wings of Eagles, one of five Aidan O’Brien-trained contenders in a nine-runner line-up at the Curragh. O’Brien also runs Capri (Seamie Heffernan), Douglas Macarthur (Donnacha O’Brien) Taj Mahal (Wayne Lordan) and The Anvil (Ana O’Brien).

The line-up includes John Gosden’s Derby third Cracksman ( Pat Smullen) and Andre Fabre-trained Waldgeist (Pierre-Charles Boudot).

David Stevens of Coral, who make Wings of Eagle a 15-8 chance, said: ‘Wings Of Eagles looks certain to start favourite. The one-time market leader Cracksman (now 3-1) is a very easy to back third favourite following the rain this week.’

SIR Mark Prescott’s Fly me to thestars (9-2) heads the betting for tomorrow’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. The Luke Morris-ridden gelding won at the track in May.

Brian Ellison’s Seamour, sixth in 2015 and runner-up last year, is 5-1 second favourite.

MELBOURNE CUP winning jockey Michelle Payne will be able to ride at the Shergar Cup at Ascot in August after a Racing Victoria panel suspended her for a month after she tested positive for banned appetite suppressant phentermine.
