Putting the bee in Blondie – Debbie’s hat is fit for a hive

- By Xantha Leatham

HONEY, she knows how to create a buzz – even at 71.

Debbie Harry took to the stage in London’s Hyde Park yesterday wearing a bizarre bumblebee headpiece.

The Blondie singer surprised her thousands of fans with the unusual striped creation to promote her new album, Pollinator.

Her shaggy blonde hair and punk rock style made her a fashion icon in the 70s and 80s.

But at the Summer Time Hyde Park Festival yesterday her blonde locks were topped with the black and yellow headgear – which also seemed to contain a pair of speakers. The title of her latest album reflects her involvement in a campaign to highlight the plight of bees and the vital role they play in the environment.

The star, whose hits include Heart of Glass, Picture This and Atomic, has said: ‘Basically, my motives for supporting pollinators is survival; survival of us all, survival of the human race.’

Earlier this week Miss Harry said she felt daunted by the size of the crowd facing the band in London, revealing: ‘ It’s a bit shocking when you are up there and there’s over 100,000 people, I have to say.’ She added: ‘I’ve been lucky, I’ve had good health and I exercise and try to eat well. I do a lot of core training and body weight exercise.’
