Phew! Heatwave’s helped high street sales reach a six-year peak

-

the heatwave has helped Britain’s retailers enjoy their best June in six years.

Lured to high streets overhaul their hot weather wardrobes, shoppers helped fashion sales rise by 1.4 per cent.

Overall takings increased by 1.3 per cent compared to last year and follows four months of zero growth, according to a report by accountancy firm BDO.

Strong tourist numbers and Father’s Day gave a 1.2 per cent boost to lifestyle goods and homeware sales were up 0.5 per cent.

Online sales dipped during the hot weather before finishing 22.2 per cent up for the month overall. Sophie Michael, of BDO, warned that June’s growth should be considered in the context of last year’s ‘dismal’ post-eU referendum figures. She said: ‘this time last year the eU referendum outcome led to reluctance by consumers to spend, making it the high street’s worst June in a decade.

‘this June, consumers were distracted by a general election, but that didn’t stop them heading to the shops when the sun came out.

‘Retailers will take heart from consumers’ willingness to spend, but there is evidence shoppers are delving into their savings which is clearly not a sustainable position.
