Why Rebecca won’t dive into online dating
FOLLOWING the break-up of a relationship, many of us are quick to reach for our smartphones to sign up to online dating.
but more than a year after she split from her husband, rebecca adlington fears her fame will prevent her from finding love the modern way.
The olympic swimmer said when a friend suggested she join the popular mobile dating app bumble – which requires women to start the conversation – she thought ‘I can’t go on that’. The 28year-old told radio Times: ‘Every guy’s going to go, “I just want to go on a date so I can say I’ve been with becky adlington”.’
Miss adlington, who won double gold at beijing 2008, suggested her fame had been part of the attraction for her exhusband, Henry Needs, also a swimmer.
she said: ‘He was younger than me, he saw beijing and idolised me. We were dating for a long time and Harry had to step back and say, “I have to figure out whether I like you or whether I like you because of what you’ve achieved”.’
Miss adlington, who has a daughter, summer, with Mr Needs, announced their separation last March after less than two years of marriage.
she said she was particularly hurt by the cruel jibes about her appearance as she experienced heartbreak.
Miss adlington is set to appear on Celebrity Master Chef later this year.
