To have and too cold! British pair are first to wed in Antarctica

- By Chris Brooke

GETTING married in one of the most remote places of earth was always going to be a challenge.

In the icy wastes of Antarctica there’s no church and the nearest bridal shop or jewellers are many, many miles away.

But being intrepid polar explorers, Julie Baum and Tom Sylvester rose to the challenge.

The couple became the first to tie the knot in the British Antarctic Territory over the weekend.

Improvisation was the order of the day. Julie, 34, with the help of fellow researchers, made her own wedding dress. For her ‘something old’, she used orange fabric from an old tent. Meanwhile Tom, 35, cut brass wed- ding rings in the research station workshop.

They shared their big day with 18 colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey’s largest research station below the Antarctic Circle. The ceremony was conducted by station leader Paul Samways.

The snowy backdrop made for spectacular pictures, although the couple had to cope with temperatures of minus 9C (15F).

Julie, from Birmingham, said: ‘Over the last ten years Tom and I have been working and travelling around the world. Getting married in Antarctica feels like it was meant to be.’
