Battery bikes need crash insurance, says EU
OWNERS of battery-powered bikes may be forced to take out accident insurance under proposed EU rules, it is claimed.
As many as one in 25 of all new bikes come with a battery and motor to help riders negotiate roads and hills.
But bike retailer Halfords and Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton have said Brussels is threatening to drive e-bike owners off the road by introducing laws that would force cyclists to take out insurance, which Halfords suggests could cost riders more than £100 a year.
If the EU proceeds with the plan it raises the spectre of all cyclists being required to have insurance. EU laws are expected to be retained after Brexit if they come into force by the time the UK leaves.
Miss Pendleton said: ‘More people are switching to e-bikes because they provide a fantastic route into cycling ... it would be so disappointing to see an introduction of insurance as it’ll undoubtedly impact levels of physical activity.’
