HOW THEY GET THEIR AMAZING COLOUR
DNA is taken from the butterfly pea and Canterbury bell by soaking their petals and leaves in a chemical solution
The ‘true blue’ DNA is separated out and transferred into a common plant bug, called an agrobacterium, using an electric shock
The genetically modified bug delivers the foreign genes into the nucleus of the chrysanthemum cell
A year later, the seeds from this plant germinate and produce plants with blue flowers
