Pakistan’s PM forced to quit... all due to a font
PAKISTAN’S prime minister has been forced to quit amid allegations of corruption.
Nawaz Sharif was yesterday disqualified by the Supreme Court after a damning probe into his family wealth.
Bizarrely, the type of font used in an incriminating document played a role in Mr Sharif’s downfall.
Last year’s Panama Papers leak had revealed offshore companies linked to the Sharif family had been used to buy a string of high-end properties in Mayfair, central London. Documents submitted in defence of the Sharifs appeared to show that the premier’s daughter Maryam was only a trustee of the company that bought the flats, not an owner.
But the declaration disclosing her ties to the firm, dated February 2006, appeared to be typed in the Calibri font – which was not introduced commercially by Microsoft until 2007.
The scandal – dubbed FontGate – raised suspicions the documents were forged.
