Go hydrogen
THE announcement that new petrol and diesel cars will be banned after 2040 will inevitably trigger a rush to put in the electricity infrastructure to cope with this poorly thought-through edict.
It reminds me of the cable TV phenomenon where our roads and pavements were ruined by the rush to dig them up in the name of progress — money and greed. Cable TV ended up as a short-lived technological revolution.
So let’s rethink this lunge towards electricity-reliant fuel for our vast transport system and invest in hydrogen power. It is clean, far cheaper, more sustainable and, as it’s based on water, future-proof.
Hydrogen power is as safe as electricity, cyber-proof, not reliant on lithium and doesn’t create waste issues.
Besides, goodness knows how we’re going to keep the lights on if we’re powering 40 million vehicles, too. MURRAY GOUGH,
Longfield, Kent. CAR pollution concerns should focus on the school run. I live in a village where no one is more than a mile away from the schools, yet twice a day our road resembles a car park- cum-racetrack, not to mention all the exhaust fumes. The police and local authority don’t appear to be able to control the situation.
When I complained that cars were blocking the footpath, I was told to walk in the road.
What a relief the families have disappeared on holiday and we can breathe again. DAVID CRITCHLEY,
