THE success of La La Land helped earn her this year’s best actress Oscar.

Now it has pushed Emma Stone to the top of the Hollywood tree in another way.

The 28-year-old has been named the year’s highest-paid actress – replacing Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence. Miss Stone made $26million (£20.2million) in the past 12 months according to Forbes magazine, mainly due to her starring role in the hit musical.

Jennifer Aniston is in second place with $25.5million. The 48year-old has a series of lucrative endorsements, starred in The Yellow Birds and still receives some money from her role in Friends. Miss Lawrence, 27, who topped the list for the previous two years, is third with $24million – just over half what she made in 2016.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson, who had been considered for Miss Stone’s part in La La Land but was busy preparing for Beauty And The Beast, makes the list for the first time. The only British actress in the top ten, she is sixth with $14million, mainly from her role as Belle.

Box office takings have fallen by up to 27 per cent as a string of flops such as The Emoji Movie have kept audiences away from the cinema this summer, it was reported yesterday.
