Syrian refugees win string of As
SYRIAN refugees Sulaiman Wihba and Elias Badin plan to become doctors ‘to give something back’ following their A-level success.
Both studied maths, further maths, physics and chemistry after receiving full scholarships to attend £23,000-a-year Brighton College. Sulaiman, 19, achieved four A*s and Elias, 20, one A* and three As. They are now set to study medicine at Queen Mary University of London.
Elias endured a harrowing two-month journey by foot, car, boat and lorry from Syria with his father, an engineer, while Sulaiman fled with his mother. They were granted asylum for five years.
Sulaiman said: ‘I am very proud and this means I can study medicine. I want to be able to give something back.’ Elias said he was ‘so grateful’ and that he was inspired to study medicine after his father collapsed during their journey.
