Victim, ten, gives birth

A TEN-year-old rape victim who was denied an abortion by India’s Supreme Court gave birth to a girl yesterday.

The victim reportedly did not know she was pregnant. She was told by her parents that she had a big stone in her stomach.

The girl had the baby by caesarean section in a hospital in the northern city of Chandigarh. The baby, who weighed 4lb 11oz, is being put up for adoption.

Last month her parents asked India’s top court to allow her to have a lateterm abortion but the request was turned down.

Indian law does not allow medical terminations after 20 weeks unless there is a threat to the life of the mother or her child.
