FLYING WALKER CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

- CHRIS SUTTON

THIS is a mouthwatering clash between two of the summer’s biggest spenders. City have added firepower down the flanks — Kyle Walker is a sensational signing — and will target Everton in the wide areas. Ronald Koeman played Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a striker, at wing back against Stoke last week and that is an area City can exploit. City will dominate but they must keep the door shut. The jury was out on John Stones last season — against Monaco in the Champions League he was torn to shreds. Stones’ decision-making should benefit from playing regularly alongside Vincent Kompany. Ederson and Jordan Pickford — two of the three most expensive goalkeepers — will also be under intense scrutiny. Pep Guardiola will want Ederson to play out from the back but he cannot take too many risks. This will be a massive test for Pickford, who will be worked hard by Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. He is not the biggest and may be targeted at set-pieces. I am not sure whether Everton’s forwards will pose a similar threat. Romelu Lukaku was involved in half of Everton’s league goals last season and, by bringing in Gylfi Sigurdsson, Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaassen, it is clear Koeman intends to spread the goals around the team. But to break into the top six you need a top-class centre forward and Everton are still lacking in that department.
