THE STORY BEHIND . . . GUBI GROSSMAN 62-SERIES DESK

- JENNY COAD

WHAT’S IN THE NAME? The Swedish designer and architect Greta M. Grossman (1906-1999) created the piece in question.

GROSSMAN? THAT SOUNDS FAMILIAR: She was married to the jazz musician Billy Grossman. They moved to LA and became part of the scene there. Grossman soon had celebrity clients — Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Frank Sinatra among them.

AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF 62? The desk was designed in 1952 but considered to be ten years ahead of its time, hence the name. IT LOOKS FINELY BALANCED: The thin metal legs and ball-shaped feet became one of her signature styles. There’s a dresser in the same series.

HOW MUCH IS IT? £2,459 at Nest, nest. co.uk. A full range of Grossman’s designs are available at Danish store Gubi, shop.gubi.com.
