CONNECT COULD BE THE NEXT STAR COLT FOR HOPEFUL COX

- By SAM TURNER Britain’s No 1 Tipster

TRAINER Clive Cox has a big day to look forward to at Haydock next Saturday and CONNECT ( Sandown, nap, 2.25) boasts bright prospects of adding to his stable’s Group race tally today.

Star sprinter Harry Angel will carry the flag for the Lambourn handler in the Group One Sprint Cup in seven days’ time, striving to follow up his impressive Darley July Cup success. However, Cox’s thriving stable is so much more than just one horse and Connect could prove to be the next star colt judged on his rate of improvement from debut to maiden victory last time.

Bred to relish a mile, Adam Kirby made the most of his mount’s stamina to serve it up from the front in a truly- run course and distance event last month, recording a strong speed figure in the process. There was a moment in the straight where one or two of Connect’s rivals looked likely to launch a challenge, but his raking stride and likeable attitude ensured they could never land a blow.

A six-length winning margin didn’t flatter Cox’s colt, who looks the perfect mix of a willing mind and true quality and it could be dangerous to underestimate his abilities this afternoon. There is no doubt the likes of Masar and Purser will be popular given they represent powerful connections and both have plenty of reasons to commend their chance. The former acquitted himself well in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, while Purser was a cosy winner of a Newbury maiden on debut, a performance which promised plenty.

However, the duo are priced accordingly and the morning odds about Connect appear very fair given his useful track experience and running style which could make him a tough horse to pass if Kirby is allowed to dictate matBig ters from the front once more.
