THE STORY BEHIND

ERCOL STUDIO COUCH

- JENNY COAD

THAT’S COLOURFUL: This edition was a collaboration between Ercol and the Scottish design studio Bluebellgray, upholstered in its abstract Treslaig print.

AND THE COUCH? That’s a classic. The Ercol Originals Studio Couch was designed by Italian Lucian Ercolani in 1956 to be both a sofa and a single bed for guests sleeping over. WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL FEATURES? The steam bent arms and solid wood design (made from elm and beech), characteristic of Ercol furniture. It also has echoes of Ercol’s Windsor Chair, designed in 1946 and exhibited at the Britain Can Make It Festival. IS IT FOR SALE? Ye s , it’s £4,995, ercol. com. And for that you might want to sleep on it full time ...
