Monkey selfie lawsuit settled

-

A BRITON has settled his two-year legal battle with an animal rights group over a monkey ‘selfie’.

A US court had ruled copyright protection could not be applied to the monkey.

But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Naruto the Indonesian macaque should get any profits from its sales.

Now photographer David Slater, of Chepstow, Monmouthshire, has agreed to donate 25 per cent of his future earnings from the image to protecting Naruto.

Mr Slater, a freelancer, had previously said that the dispute had left him so broke he was considering becoming a dog walker and that he could not afford to run a car.

He said: ‘Every photographer dreams of a photograph like this. If everybody gave me a pound for every time they used (it) I’d probably have £40million in my pocket ...the proceeds should have me comfortable now, and I’m not’.
