Headphones: The new type of hearing aid

-

WEARING a traditional hearing aid is not the only way to deal with hearing loss. For those who feel more comfortable wearing a sleek set of headphones, there s a new type of device that could transform their hearing. It sits comfortably around the neck like a discreet set of headphones, but connects to you via soft earbuds that are provided in a range of sizes. The band-like device detects ranges that you may be missing and then programs itself, boosting sounds so that you can hear them. When connected via Bluetooth to a free app, it s possible to conduct a personal hearing test, receive and make phone calls or listen to music. Sound quality is very high, with no whistling — and it can be re-tuned any number of times if your hearing profile changes. There are four settings (all-around, indoor, outdoor and traffic) that can be quickly changed via the app on your mobile phone, which also allows fine-tuning while you are wearing the device. The Bluetooth link means that you can use it to make and answer calls on your mobile phone. With a click on the neckband you can switch to listening to music from your phone or tablet. The amplifier also enables you to hear television and radio better. An optional transmitter further amplifies the sound from television, radio, conversation or other sources and transmits it directly to the headset. Put your home telephone in handsfree/speaker mode and you can make and receive calls via the band. When it is switched on, a voice message tells you whether you need to recharge, with each charge giving ten-plus hours of service. The device was developed for younger people with hearing difficulties, who feel more at ease wearing a set of headphones than even a tiny hearing aid. But now the functionality and design have caught on across other age groups. The band is also ideal for those who have impaired mobility, as well as hearing loss. The simple operation and the fact that it isn t a tiny device makes it easy to use for those with arthritis and similar problems. It s the new way to counter hearing loss, combining excellent results for users with high style.
