presenter Jeremy Vine has had many acrimonious run-ins with car drivers on his bicycle, but his most brutal collision took place at Durham University when he was a mere pedestrian.

‘When I was a student, I bought a Chinese takeaway and someone walking past hit me in the face and ran off with the takeaway,’ he explains. ‘I thought: “That’s a bloody hard lesson of life”. It probably is the hardest lesson, actually — the sheer randomness and unfairness.

‘Of course, losing a Chinese takeaway is nothing compared to what many people face, but it’s a good lesson in how brutal life can be.’
