Guilty, rapist who yelled ‘I am Saddam’

- By Tom Witherow

A KUWAITI raped a woman weeks after being granted the right to live in Britain.

Abdel-Aziz Al- Shamary, who is thought to have entered the country illegally, pounced on his victim on a river bank.

He shouted, ‘Do you know Saddam Hussein? I am Saddam Hussein’ in police custody and refused to speak to a woman officer because ‘in my country we speak to men’.

Yesterday a jury found the 21-yearold guilty of the rape outside a pub in Darlington, County Durham.

Teesside Crown Court was told his bloodied and sobbing victim, who was in her thirties, was found lying face down with her jeans around her ankles. Before the attack Al-Shamary had watched pornographic videos showing outdoor sex and downed two bottles of Jack Daniel’s whiskey. He is also understood to be a drug addict.

The victim told police officers in a video statement played to the jury: ‘I left the pub and he came over to me and pushed me over on the grass of the river bank.

‘I fell face down with my arms in front of me and I turned to look at him and he punched me in the face. He punched me again with his fist and hit me on the nose, when I put my hand to my

face it was covered in blood. Then he got on top of me.’ She added: ‘He told me not to say anything or he would come back and hurt me.

‘He made me feel horrible, scared and frightened.’

Al-Shamary, of Darlington, was remanded in custody until he is sentenced early in November. Judge Sean Morris ordered reports into his attitude towards women and warned he would impose a substantial sentence.

Paul Abrahams, prosecuting, said there would be an application for Al-Shamary to be deported once he had served his sentence. A Home Office spokesman added: ‘Foreign nationals who abuse our hospitality by committing crimes in the UK should be in no doubt of our determination to deport them.’

Al- Shamary is thought to have come to Britain in 2015. He was given the right to stay here in May 2016, a fortnight before the attack.

The jury, which reached a 10-2 majority verdict, was told DNA from the victim was found on Al-Shamary’s underwear.
