WE HAVE a glut of butternut squashes from our allotment. How long will they last and what’s the best way to store them? Mrs Lee, Somerset. IF you harvest your squashes quickly and store them carefully, they should last up to six months.

Squashes must be mature and undamaged when you gather them. they should be allowed to ‘cure’ after harvest by being laid out in the sun, or in a dry greenhouse.

Eat the damaged squashes first. Store the undamaged ones in a cool, dry and airy position.
