PHRASE EXPLAINED

The curate’s egg: refers to the idea of being good in parts. It first appeared in a cartoon in Punch magazine in 1895; it depicted a shy, young curate at his bishop’s table too timid to say that his egg was bad. The curate said “parts of it are excellent”.
