THE mountaineer Chris Bonington has surveyed some breathtaking panoramas from the highest summits of the world, but his favourite view lies nearer to home. High Pike in the Lake District is, by Chris’s standards, a modest 2,159ft high. It lies close to the mountaineer’s house, and he regularly walks his dog there. For this week’s OPEN COUNTRY (RADIO 4, 3PM), Helen Mark joins Chris on a climb of High Pike, and he tells her why he loves the view from the top.

ANTONIA QUIRKE presents a special edition of THE FILM PROGRAMME (RADIO 4, 4PM) looking at a genre guaranteed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats — the thriller. She hears some tricks of the trade from Ronan Bennett, the writer of Face, Public

Enemies and Gunpowder — the latter currently showing on Saturday nights on BBC1 — who reveals why he thinks thrillers should really be called ‘tensers’. LIAM GALLAGHER (pictured) has just released his debut solo album, As You Were, and he’ll be playing music from it live tonight on RADIO 2 IN CONCERT (8PM), introduced by Jo Whiley. He will also play some of the Oasis hits from back in the day, when the Gallagher brothers could bear to share the same stage. Will brother Noel will be singing along at home?
