New York terrorist asked: How do I find job in Britain?

Trump urges death penalty for rampage Jihadi’s astonishing question to Briton travelling in his Uber

- From Tom Leonard in New York

A BRITISH tourist last night revealed how the New York truck terrorist had asked him how he could get a job in the UK.

Damian Erskine said he flew in to Newark airport last Thursday and Sayfullo Saipov was the Uber driver who picked him up.

As they chatted for an hour, the Uzbek migrant asked how much he could earn in the UK – and wanted to own a Range Rover as they are ‘the height of Britishness’. Days later, he went on to kill eight as he rammed into crowds with a van in New York.

New details of the terror suspect emerged yesterday as Donald Trump demanded the death penalty.

Investigators say that, since arriving in the US seven years ago, Saipov had struggled to find work. Mr Erskine said as he was driven to a destination in New Jersey, his 29-yearold driver seemed interested in moving to Britain.

He said: ‘He was asking about the UK, he was asking about jobs in the UK and he wanted to know how much an engineer would earn every month.

‘He was very polite. He rushed to help with the bags at both ends and he said “bye” when he drove off.’ Mr Erskine added: ‘We talked for a long time. He said how he one day wished he could own a Range Rover. He said they were the height of Britishness and luxury and that kind of thing.’

Mr Erskine, who said he was helping the FBI with its enquiries, paid $41.69 (£32) for the

Arrest: Sayfullo Saipov journey and rated Saipov five stars out of five on the Uber app. The terror suspect has an average rating of 4.76, the app showed. Mr Erskine said he was stunned when police published a photo of Saipov soon after Tuesday’s attack. ‘It just makes you feel sick really,’ he said. ‘I shared this time with someone who’s gone on to do something like that and was obviously planning to do something like that. It doesn’t sound like it was a spur of the moment thing.’ Mr Trump yesterday demanded Saipov, who is in hospital after being shot by police, get the death penalty.

The President hardened his stance after earlier saying he wanted to send the suspect to Guantanamo.

His comments, on Twitter, came after reports that the married father of three had boasted he was proud of the attack and had asked to hang the Islamic State flag in his hospital room.

In a series of tweets, the President said: ‘NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room… SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!’ he said.

He later said he would ‘love’ to send Saipov to the controversial US military prison in Cuba but ‘ statistically that takes much longer than going through the federal system’. Although New York doesn’t have the death penalty, Saipov faces federal terrorism charges which are punishable by death. ‘There is something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed,’ said Mr Trump. ‘Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!’

The FBI said Saipov had asked to display the black flag of IS in his hospital room and ‘felt good about what he had done’.

Saipov chose Halloween, say investigators, because he believed it would bring far more people on to the streets. A week ago, he rented a truck to practice how to make turns in it.
