New health scare as Klopp goes to hospital

- DOMINIC KING

JURGEN KLOPP has suffered his second health scare as Liverpool manager and admitted himself to hospital. The German felt unwell yesterday morning and was seen by doctors. He was not expected to be kept in overnight, but will be assessed over the next 24 hours before a decision is made on when he will return to work. Klopp missed Liverpool’s home game against Sunderland in February 2016 after having his appendix removed, but was fit enough to take his place back on the bench for an FA Cup replay against West Ham four days later. There is no indication at the moment whether Klopp will be in the dugout for Saturday’s Anfield clash with Southampton. A club statement said: ‘There are

currently no plans for Jurgen to remain in hospital beyond his appointment and he will return home this evening; however, he may require further check-ups.’ Saturday’s game will see Virgil van Dijk play against the team he tried to join in the summer, but Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is confident he will perform well. Van Dijk had handed in a transfer request and was banished from training, but Pellegrino said: ‘I don’t think it will be difficult because Virgil is focused 100 per cent on our team and is training well. Sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal.’
