A SON BY THE BISHOP’S DAUGHTER

-

Celia Paul, the daughter of an anglican bishop, was at the Slade School of Fine art when she met Freud. She was 18 and he was 54. They were an item from the late Seventies to the mid eighties and he bought her a studio flat in Bloomsbury. They had a son together, Frank. Recalling a dinner with her father and Freud, Celia said: ‘My father asked if he should dress up in his bishop’s gear and lucian said he’d love that. We had a really good time; but afterwards, my father said that lucian was the most selfish man he’d ever met.’ She has said that lucian attended her art show in 2011 and he was ‘so tender and loving’, adding: ‘We continually forgave each other — and we had art and love and our son Frank.’

THE youngest of Lucian Freud’s children is Frank Paul, who was born in 1984.

He lives in Cambridge, where he was raised by his grandmother (because his parents were ‘too busy painting’), and works as a graphic artist, often in biro.

As a child, he’d visit his father once a month. He once sent Lucian a drawing and got the response: ‘It’s rather good, isn’t it?’ He says he found it hard to relate to him.
