For England fans, it’s a one-pint World Cup

- Charles Sale

A RUSSIAN tourism chief has advised England football fans to limit themselves to just one pint before or after matches at the World Cup.

Igor Karzov, of Visit Russia, made this highly optimistic request while warning English supporters travelling to next year’s tournament that he couldn’t guarantee their safety if they were drunk and offensive.

Speaking at a Russian 2018 roadshow in London, Karzov also declared that Big Brother in the shape of the security services will be watching wherever fans congregate and will intervene if necessary to limit drinking.

Karzov said: ‘I would recommend that English football fans don’t drink a lot when they’re in Russia. It’s OK to have a pint before or after the game. The culture is different.

‘The security services will have a high level of control in Russia so they will make sure people are not drunk. They will be watching and set up control if something is going on. They will restrict alcohol to avoid any possible conflicts.

‘We know that British fans love to drink a lot. But I can’t guarantee safety if fans are really drunk and offensive. We can’t guarantee everything’s going to be OK in that case.’
