SWEETEN your porridge with cinnamon, not sugar. As well as cutting down on calories, it could boost your metabolism, according to a new study published in the journal Metabolism. Researcher­s from the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute found that cinnamalde­hyde, an essential oil in cinnamon that gives the spice its flavour, acts directly on fat cells, triggering them to burn more energy.
