... and exercise boosts memory

-

PHYSICAL fitness may help fight dementia – even among those who already have it.

A study suggests it is never too late to benefit from exercise, with those who are active showing fewer signs of memory loss.

When 70 pensioners were tested on memory and thinking skills, those with dementia who had better balance, strength and fitness got higher scores.

Researchers at University College London, whose study is published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, suggest this is because physical activity helps stimulate blood circulation in the brain.

Alice Hollamby, from UCL, said: ‘Living with dementia poses many challenges and the idea of improving physical fitness may seem unachievable. Even helping around the house or the garden, taking a short walk or swim, could play a big part in slowing the progression.’

Dr Dorina Cadar, from UCL, said: ‘Ensuring reasonable activity could bring extra years of cognitive spark.’
