Mourinho: £300m isn’t enough to take on City
JOSE MOURINHO last night demanded Manchester United release further millions in a bid to compete with Manchester City. United needed a stoppagetime equaliser from Jesse Lingard (right) to earn a point against Burnley but are still 12 points behind Premier League leaders City. United have now dropped seven points in five Premier League games. United manager Mourinho urged vice-chairman Ed Woodward to find more cash despite having spent nearly £300million in 18 months. ‘It is not enough, it is not enough,’ Mourinho said of the sum spent since he took over. ‘City buy full backs for the price of the strikers.’ Mourinho then suggested United’s history is used against them and that his squad are not equipped to win the Premier League. ‘The price for the big clubs is different from the other clubs,’ he said. ‘The big, historic clubs are normally punished in the market for their history. ‘When you speak about big clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club. ‘We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a team you know is not one of the best in the world. ‘When you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, Tottenham do not have that because they are not a club with the same history as us. ‘Arsenal don’t have the responsibility to win it, Chelsea don’t.’ Mourinho said in August that he felt United were candidates to win their first title since 2013 but dismissed suggestions that two wins in six means they are underperforming. ‘The boys are doing fine,’ he added. ‘You say seven points from 15, I say last two matches we had 15 chances and we conceded three “S” (s***) goals and an amazing free-kick. ‘I’m unhappy with the result but I am happy with my players.’ Lingard’s second-half double matched goals by Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour. Burnley have now taken points at Old Trafford, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool. Burnley boss Sean Dyche said: ‘The only frustration — a couple of decisions went against us. ‘They’ve only lost once here this season. We want to improve on last season and there are clear signs of that.’
