Do we want a return to traditional blue passports after Brexit?

-

THE elitist groups sneering at the return of our glorious blue passports are the same people who voted to remain in the EU and have never ceased moaning about their defeat since. Those of us who voted Leave are ecstatic at the thought of the return of our beloved passports. That’s because we have an allegiance to our country and want to celebrate our history and heritage. L. GADSBY, Truro, Cornwall. I HAD not intended to renew my soon-to-expire passport, but now we are to get our proper one back, I certainly will. This document defines my nationality and states clearly that I am a subject of Her Britannic Majesty and not some cobbled together conglomerate. ROBERT COOKE, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancs. WHY are Germany and France bidding, along with Britain, to print the blue passports? We should not have to follow EU rules if they submit a lower bid. A. TURNER, Bridgend.

SENSIBLE people aren’t worried about the colour of the passport. What we don’t want is to get held up when we have to dash from one airport gate to another to catch the last flight. We can’t have more red tape, queuing at the borders or HGVs stuck at Dover. Do we really want to return to the days when it took nearly two hours to get through most eastern European airports and then you had to have visas and change only so much currency a day? Travellers won’t stand for it. CLIVE SMITH, Chelmsford, Essex. YEARS ago in a pound shop, I bought a blue passport cover. No matter where I travelled, this raised a smile and pleasant comment at passport control and hotel desks. They all saw that British people value their country. G. DAWSON, Liverpool. MARGARET THATCHER was not forced to introduce burgundy passports by the EU. It was a sovereign decision of the UK. I don’t mind what colour my travel documents are. I do mind what they enable me to do. At present we can move, live and work freely in all EU countries. After Brexit if we live in an EU state other than the one of which we are a citizen, our rights in that country will be retained, but we will lose the right to live or work in another EU state. I would prefer to preserve my freedom to live and work where I want rather than get emotional about the colour of a travel document. RAY CORBETT, London SE20. WHY don’t we have a passport in red, white and blue along with a lion, so we can all roar about it? LIZ THOMPSON, Leeds, W. Yorks. I BET if Nicola Sturgeon had won the vote for Scottish independence, she would have had a tartan cover on her passport! DAVID KIRKWOOD, Aspatria, Cumbria.
