Pressure on The Best
IT’S not the Army recruitment slogan Be The Best that is responsible for the huge fall in recruits (Mail).
I believe it is down to the betrayal of Sgt Alexander Blackman, the Royal Marine, who, in the heat of battle, suffered a momentary loss of control and was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
His conviction was overturned on appeal after he had served three-and-a-half years in prison.
Another issue is the hounding of former soldiers by money-grubbing lawyers over events in Northern Ireland 40 years ago.
If I were a young man considering a life in the Army, I’d think: ‘Sod that for a game of soldiers.’
