Snow, ice and 50mph winds as big chill blasts back

- By Richard Marsden

don’t put your woollies away just yet – a blast of icy air could bring snow and sleet to much of the country next week.

After a gloomy and damp weekend, an Arctic chill is expected to usher in 50mph gales and frosty nights.

overnight temperatures could reach lows of -3C (27F) in most areas – even lower on snow-covered mountain tops.

Meteorological office forecaster Emma Sharples said: ‘Cold air is set to spread across the country overnight into Monday. on Monday night and through tuesday in Scotland and northern Ireland we have issued a weather warning of possible hail and snow, with up to four inches possible above 200 metres.

‘In England and Wales, we are looking at a mixture of sunshine and blustery showers with some hail, sleet and snow mixed in, which will continue towards the end of the week. Snow showers are most likely on the hills, mountains and moors but no major accumulations are likely.’

She added that strong winds and gales of up to 50mph are expected, particularly near western coasts. It is likely to be frosty overnight in rural areas but cities may escape the ice with temperatures just above 0C.

daytime temperatures will be between 6C and 8C (43F to 46F) in Wales and the South of England, and between 5C and 7C (41F to 45F) in the north.

Miss Sharples said the spell of bitterly cold and showery weather is likely to stay until the end of the week.

today, we can expect to see rain and mild temperatures up to 11C (52F), while most areas should be dry and cloudy tomorrow. Sunday temperatures will remain mild with highs of 11C in the South and 8C (46F) in the north.
