1066 and all that

-

iT’s often said that the one historical date every schoolchild knows is 1066, the Battle of Hastings. is that still true today?

now Britain is to borrow the Bayeux Tapestry and with Game of Thrones and TV series about the Vikings and Tudors so popular, i’m surprised 1066, which saw the complete overthrow of the English ruling classes, has been ignored.

There are dramatic battle scenes and charismatic characters in abundance led by Harold and William the Bastard, Duke of normandy.

and there is even romantic interest: Harold’s long-term mistress was Edith swanneck, said to be the most beautiful woman in England.

so, come on, Hollywood, a blockbuster is waiting to be made.

MIKE WRAY, Leconfield, E. Yorks. in rETUrn for the Bayeux Tapestry, we should send President Emmanuel Macron a ‘Bye EUx’ Tapestry.

ROGER J. ARTHUR, Pulborough, W. Sussex. PErHaPs we should lend France the D-Day Tapestry from the D-Day Museum as a gentle reminder that where they came as conquerors, we crossed the Channel as liberators.

KEITH HOBBS, Southsea, Hants.
