Protests over Amazon’s live lobster sales

-

AMAZON was branded ‘inhumane’ yesterday after it was revealed the internet giant sells live lobsters for home delivery in Britain.

Protesters accused it of supporting animal suffering as the lobsters could spend days in boxes as they are transported.

There have been growing calls for lobsters to be given greater protection. Last month Switzerland banned boiling them alive, and last week dozens of scientists and wildlife campaigners called on the Government to include them in a new Animal Welfare Bill.

The Canadian lobsters are sold through Amazon by British firm Fine Food Specialist. Founder Drogo Montagu said: ‘There is a small market, but it is people who love food and want the very best.’

Amazon declined to comment as the lobsters were sold by a third party.

But among a series of damning comments on the Amazon page, one user wrote: ‘It is cruelty to send live animals through the post.’
