I took Lineker to Spain but I hope Harry says no

- TERRY VENABLES Terry Venables was talking to Alex Montgomery

HARRY KANE is a supreme goalscorer, so easy on the eye — unless you are a defender trying to stop him.

When I watch him I think of Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham. There is a bit of both in the way he plays. He can come short and play deeper or he can play as the centre forward.

Harry could play well with Jamie Vardy up there for England. They can be absolutely lethal together. With Jamie’s pace, England could play Harry deeper.

That way, you make the most of Jamie’s quick reactions and it might create space for the Tottenham striker.

When I was England manager, I played Alan and Teddy together at Euro 96 when we beat Holland 4- 1. Shearer scored his third and fourth goals of the tournament and Sheringham netted twice, too.

It was a memorable day. We won, our team played well — outstandingly well — and it was an important victory.

I hope Harry gets to play in an England team who can create their own memories.

From what I hear, he is an excellent professional who conducts himself well on and off the pitch. He is a young man who looks and acts as if he is settled and happy.

When you hear that Spurs have scored a goal, you think to yourself it is probably Harry and it usually is.

To get his 100th Premier League goal is a considerable achievement, well worth all the praise. It is confirmation of his status worldwide as a goalscorer of distinction who can operate under the most intense pressure, as he showed with his nerveless second penalty in front of The Kop. That’s why he’s a wanted man and that is something Spurs will have come to terms with.

There is obviously talk of Real Madrid and I took Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes to Spain when I was manager at Barcelona.

Gary joined me in Spain after he won the World Cup Golden Boot in 1986. He produced goals, he scored 21 in 41 games in his first season — a fine return. The fee was under £3 million. Now, with market forces, Harry is being talked about as a £200m signing!

The fact that Real Madrid need more firepower to match Barcelona’s surge means the world’s top goalscorers will be targets. Spurs may have a fight on their hands.

I hope Harry stays here. We don’t want another of our Premier League talents being lured by Spain’s big two.

Spurs will have to match his ambition and they will also need to move quickly with a contract offer, especially with some of the money being thrown around by Manchester City and Manchester United.

You can’t ask Harry to settle for less... not for a player of his class.
