Courier died after firm fined him for seeing a doctor
A DIABETIC courier fined £150 by bosses for attending a medical appointment later died of the disease.
Don Lane, 53, collapsed four times in a year but missed appointments as he felt under pressure to work. He died five months after courier DPD fined him for the hospital check-up in July.
Mr Lane had worked for DPD for 19 years as a self-employed franchisee with no entitlement to sick pay. He had to find his own cover or face being fined.
He collapsed at home in Christchurch, Dorset, on December 30 and died in hospital. His widow, Ruth, 55, pictured with him, said he had been vomiting blood, adding: ‘They knew how ill he was.’ DPD, which made more than £100million after tax in 2016, said: ‘We got it wrong.’
