The letters about VW Beetle cars (Peterborough) reminded me of the time in the Fifties when my father was showing off his new Beetle to my great uncle george, a retired farm labourer. When father displayed the engine at the rear of the car, george was impressed and said: ‘What a blooming good idea to have a spare engine in the boot!’ Ray Boulton, Langtoft, Cambs.
