Spurs won’t break bank for Alderweireld

- By SAMI MOKBEL

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD’S wage demands have brought talks with Tottenham over a contract extension to a standstill. It is believed the Belgian, 29 next month, is seeking a five-year contract and a salary far in excess of the club’s £110,000-a-week pay ceiling. Talks are close to breaking point as there is such a distance between the two parties. real Madrid are understood to be monitoring the situation closely. Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal would also be interested in the centre back but Tottenham would be reluctant to sell to a domestic rival. Alderweireld earns £50,000 per week and Spurs have so far refused to give in to his demands while sources claim there is no middle ground in sight. The player’s deal expires in the summer of 2019, but Tottenham have the option of an extra 12 months. however, triggering that extension would activate a clause allowing the Belgian to leave for £25million — well below market value. That means Tottenham may cash in this summer. Meanwhile, Spurs have promised to help their former midfielder ryan Mason’s move into coaching. The 26-year-old was forced into retirement earlier this week on medical advice, 13 months after fracturing his skull when playing for hull. Last week Mason discussed potential future plans with Tottenham academy boss John McDermott, though he is now expected to take some time out. ‘We have been talking a lot with ryan,’ said Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino. ‘It is sad news but he opens a door for his future with his family. he is 26 but his brain is amazing, he is an amazing person. he will be a successful person in football in everything he wants to do.’
