McGregor’s rocket gives Celtic edge

- JOHN McGARRY

CALLUM McGREGOR last night put Celtic in pole position to make the last 16 of the Europa League with a fabulous late strike against Roberto Mancini’s Zenit St Petersburg. With 12 minutes remaining, the Scotland midfielder took Charly Musonda’s looping cross in his stride and fired past goalkeeper Andrey Lunev. The stunning drive handed Brendan Rodgers’ men a slender advantage going into next Thursday’s second leg. Rodgers hailed Musonda’s contribution after the midfielder, on loan from Chelsea, came on just five minutes before the goal. ‘It was a great piece of skill by young Charly and then an absolutely brilliant finish by Callum,’ said the Celtic boss. ‘The technique is sensational. Charly is a dribbler, he was very good when he came on.’ Michy Batshuayi, the Chelsea striker on loan at Borussia Dortmund, scored twice as the German side beat Atalanta 3-2. The Belgium striker has scored five goals in three games since being allowed to leave Stamford Bridge in January.
