Bennett set to stay on as England boss
Australian Wayne Bennett is set to remain as England head coach following their impressive World Cup showing.
The 68-year-old’s contract with the rugby Football League expired after he led England to the final of the 2017 World Cup in December, where they were narrowly beaten by hosts and overwhelming favourites Australia.
Bennett, the most successful coach in Australian history, declined to comment on his future following the 6- 0 defeat but players were united in their desire for him to stay. The Rfl are understood to have accepted a recommendation from rugby director Kevin Sinfield, the former Leeds and England captain, who has conducted a review into the national team’s performance at the World Cup.
Confirmation of the reappointment of Bennett is expected early next week. Bennett succeeded Steve Mcnamara two years ago on a part- time basis while continuing his day job with Brisbane Broncos.
Meanwhile, Leeds coach Brian McDermott reckons his side would be competitive in the Nrl despite losing 38- 4 to Melbourne in the World Club Challenge yesterday. ‘I’d like to say that, given 10 games like that, I reckon we’d be up to that level,’ he said. ‘We’ll learn some massive lessons from that.’
