INCREDIBLE!
Wigan pull off a miracle to leave Pep dream in tatters
MANCHESTER CITY’S quest for a historic Quadruple is over after an astonishing FA Cup upset at League One Wigan.
Will Grigg’s goal 11 minutes from the end sank City, who had been reduced to 10 men when Fabian Delph was sent off just before half time.
That sparked a furious bust-up between City boss Pep Guardiola and striker Sergio Aguero on one side and Wigan’s manager Paul Cook on the other, which spilled into the tunnel.
And at full time a Wigan fan tried to punch Aguero during a mass pitch invasion, with the Argentine having to be held back by physio Steven Lilley.
Northern Ireland international Grigg said: ‘ It was an unbelievable performance from the lads. City are one of the best teams in the world. I caught their offside trap and it was a race with Kyle Walker which wasn’t ideal.
‘To be honest, I didn’t think it was possible for us to beat them. The gaffer
and the staff put a plan together and the lads executed it. Every player was outstanding. ‘They have some unbelievable players — the best in the world in that side. They move the ball so quickly. But our defending, especially in the last 10 minutes, was brilliant.’ Cook added: ‘The two centre halves were excellent. You just shut your eyes and pray with the number of balls in the box. We should enjoy tonight. It’s such a severe test in everything.’ Guardiola said: ‘We conceded one shot on target in 90 minutes and we lost. They made some mistakes in general. We knew it would be complicated. ‘We did it quite well, especially in the second half. One mistake and we conceded and we go out. ‘I didn’t have the feeling that we didn’t try, that would have been a worry. ‘We’re sad because the FA Cup is a nice competition but football counts what happens in 94 minutes. They deserved to go through.’
