Unilever’s ‘ethical’ boss takes home £10m
THE boss of consumer goods behemoth Unilever pocketed £10.3m last year thanks largely to a massive bonus payout.
Paul Polman, 61, saw his pay jump 39pc in a year as profits rose 9pc to £7.2bn.
The chief executive took home a base salary, fixed allowance and benefits worth £1.8m, says the annual report.
Polman has to live in Holland for his job, and £440,000 covered the difference between its high taxes and what his UK bill would be. He got £119,000 for his pension, and an annual bonus of £2m.
Under Unilever’s longterm bonus scheme, he got £6.4m, almost double what it was a year earlier.
A keen environmentalist, Polman talks about how Unilever, which makes everything from Dove deodorant to Marmite and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, should try to make the world a better place.
Married with three children, he successfully fought off a £104bn takeover bid from rival Kraft Heinz last year.
