Bear with me, Mum, I’m new to all this fame...

- By Victoria Allen Science Correspondent

WHEN it’s your photocall debut, you want to look your best. And this polar bear cub certainly managed that on its first outing with its mother.

Tiny, fluffy and white, the cub – the first born in Britain for 25 years – was, well, unbearably cute as it enjoyed the snow.

At nearly three months, it is the size of a terrier, having been the weight of a guinea pig at birth.

The cub, whose sex is not yet known, was born on December 18 at Highland Wildlife Park in Scotland and will not be on public show until the end of March.

A camera set up to film the birth was knocked sideways by mother Victoria, so the only sign it had arrived was high-pitched squeaking. No one could enter the den for fear of stressing Victoria.

Head keeper Una Richardson said: ‘Victoria had started to come outside by herself. On Sunday morning suddenly I saw a small, fluffy bundle next to her. It was a very special experience.’

The pictures were filmed for Britain’s Polar Bear Cub, to be shown on Channel 4 on March 18.
