Lloyd Webber, in conversation with interviewer graham norton for a future broadcast, says: ‘i remember going to Warners once about (his show) The Phantom Of The Opera. There was this big meeting and the head of the creative department said to me, “We understand why The Phantom and Christine sing in the opera house, but we don’t understand why they would sing on the opera house roof.”’ His lordship explained that if this logic was followed, the novice nun Maria wouldn’t sing The Sound Of Music on a mountain but in her convent. ‘He looked at me blankly,’ says Lloyd Webber.
